Woodlea Travel Plan Team
At Woodlea Primary School, we pride ourselves on promoting healthy and active lifestyles as well as teaching our whole school community, how to stay safe at all times.
Mrs. Duffield, our Travel Plan Coordinator, works with the school's Travel Plan team. This consists of children elected from each class across the school and our two Junior Road Safety Officers (JRSOs).
As a school, we are part of the Modeshift STARS scheme - the national schools award scheme established to recognise schools that have demonstrated excellence in supporting cycling, walking, scooting and other forms of sustainable travel. The scheme encourages schools across the country to join in a major effort to increase levels of sustainable and active travel in order to improve everyone's emotional health and well-being.
In addition, the school has teamed up with the Living Streets Project, the local council and our local community to adapt and promote resources and opportunities for the children and families of Woodlea to access the local and natural environment sustainably. Activities we have taken part in range from our daily Travel Tracker (completed by each class), staff travel surveys, curriculum activities based around road safety, to special one off events such as Bling Your Bike Breakfast, Be Bright, Be Seen Day and Big Bike Pedal.
In February 2020, we were lucky to be awarded our Bronze Award. A very special visitor came to present our JRSOs with our special plaque.
Bikes and Scooters
In May 2021, we were very lucky to have brand new scooter and bike pods fitted around our school. These are made from 100% recycled materials and the street pods save 30% more space compared to other bike racks.
We have also been working very closely with our local community and local council, to improve parking around our school entrance. We have consulted parents and neighbours and have looked at other options for parking to ensure that children, families and staff can walk to school and cross the road safely. Working with Modeshift STARS, we have created our 5 minute walking bubble postcards, which shows families where they can park within the local area but still keeping our main entrance area clear and safe. We have handed these postcards out to families and we have lamp post signs to remind people about being active and keeping everyone safe.
We have set up Woodlea Travel permits for bikes and scooters. The Travel Plan team have created a bike and scooter contract that al children must adhere too if they would like to scoot or bike to school. You can download a permit form by clicking on the link below:
In July 2021, Woodlea Primary School were in the top ten schools in Hampshire County Council who took part in the WOW Walk of Fame Challenge. 14,296 pupils across the county, took part.
Considerate Parking and Road Safety
Whitehill is a thriving community and Atholl Road can be extremely busy areas with our own school and local residents.
We do appreciate the difficulties in parking but request that you refrain from parking on the yellow zigzags, paths / pavements / grass verges and parking across driveways and entrances. This would enhance the children’s safety and help to promote the positive relationships that exist with our neighbours.
In addition, we regularly talk to the children about keeping themselves safe, especially when crossing roads and walking to and from school and ask that you reinforce this message at home.
We thank you for your consideration and cooperation in this matter.
